And when Im at war with myself I ride, I just ride. Ride shows how broken that lifestyle is, to try to be exciting and glamorous and fun, and Chemtrails shows the opposite, where you live the typical boring "rich country club" suburban life but want to ditch it for something more free. And my motto is the same as ever: I believe in the kindness of strangers. Ride and Chemtrails both show the struggle of having a good life, but still having an internal pull to want to demolish it all and do something crazy. I feel like Lana has probably had these feelings ever since she was young, since it's rumored that she lived the typical suburban life yet developed an alcohol problem and would sneak out with her friends often. But to satisfy that urge, you have to sacrifice everything, everything else- finding real love, having security, relationships with people who genuinely care about you, all because this annoying fucking part of you that finds good things in life boring and makes you want to worsen it just for the sake of thrill. That's mainly what Ride explores- giving into one's innate compulsion towards chaos and excitement by being on the road and fucking/falling in love with crazy amounts of people, all to quench that thirst for spontaneity. And so, you're constantly in this internal tug of war, to say fuck it and go crazy like a teenager and do a bunch of stupid shit, because it satisfies that wild side, but it leaves you empty and feeling unsafe because nothing about your life is stable. Having a wild side that always fucks up things going good for you because, no matter how hard you try, you just can't be satisfied with normality, a life that's comfortable and the same every day. I think in the abstract, Ride and Chemtrails are linked directly to each other- they're both about wanting things that are incompatible with living a healthy life.

Idk what specifically the song Ride is about, if it's just about her own days on the road or the story of a prostitute or having sex with older men bc of daddy issues (although she seems to have a good relationship with her dad so it might not be that one).īut just analyzing Ride in the abstract, I've always found it to be an interesting song even just that way.
